Instructional Garden Project

IGP Teacher Education Workshop, IPM Twister Game, Sept. 2005

The Instructional Garden Project (IGP) at Penn State uses innovative, experiential
garden-based education in order to:

* Increase ecological literacy and stewardship

* Improve nutritional competency through growing and consuming
new fruits, vegetables and herbs and exposure to ethnic foodways

* Introduce physical activity that connects children to nature and healthy living

* Provide a resource for teachers to satisfy PA Dept of Education Standards
through related science experiments, projects and observations, historical
reenactment activities, and sustainable entrepreneurship

* Utilize the “outdoor classroom” through sustainable, beautiful, biodiverse
schoolyard ecosystems

In collaboration with the Penn State Center for Science and the Schools, the Department of Nutrition,
and Agricultural Extension, the Center offered a four hour workshop in September. 2005 entitled:
"Using Herbs to Teach Science and History." A shorter version of the workshop was offered at the
PA Science Teachers Association Conference in Hershey, PA in December 2005.
